GISRUK, Manchester, The Monastery, PopChange and coding

Nick left a sunny Cornwall behind just after Easter to head up to Manchester for the 25th GISRUK Conference. GISRUK (Geographic Information Science Research UK) is an annual conference bringing together GIS researchers from the UK and beyond. There was a very wide range of presentations, covering everything from new spatial data methods, and applications to cartograms and iron age hill forts! I was presenting a poster on PopChange

GIS for Natural Resource Management and International Development at UEA Norwich

Over three sunny days at the end of March, Nick & Paul ran an intensive GIS course for International Development students at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. We have run this course for a number of years, giving International Development students an in-depth overview of what GIS can do and how it can help them in their future careers.

PopChange Workshop at University of Liverpool in London

Kirstin and Nick headed up to London last weekend to run a half day PopChange workshop with Chris Lloyd, head of the Centre for Spatial Demographics Research (University of Liverpool). It was great to share the PopChange resource with so many enthusiastic attendees and find out how the resource could be utilised in the workplace.

Courses at University College London with CDRC and ADRC-E

On a cold sunny Tuesday and Wednesday in February, Nick ran two 1 day courses at UCL (University College London) on Introduction to Spatial Data & Using R as a GIS and Confident Spatial Analysis. The courses were geared for anyone new to R and scripting, and had a great selection of participants, including students, academics, public sector and commercial users.

HERG Writing Retreat at Dartington Hall

Over a fresh, sunny three days in early January, I joined 17 academic writers at Dartington Hall, Totnes for a writing retreat. What is a writing retreat, I hear you ask? Well, for academics working at a university, one of the key ways of conveying findings from their research is by writing papers that are published in academic journals. Writing these papers (often 5000 - 8000 words long) is a very time intensive task and also often key to promotion up through the university structure.
